West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Middlesbrough and Burnley are all in a four-club race to seal the signing of Rennes midfielder Jordan James ahead of hopeful respective promotion bids in the upcoming 2026/27 Championship campaign.

The latest development comes amid a wealth of continental interest in the 21-year-old, who impressed back in English football’s second-tier on loan for a relegated Leicester City side last time out.

All four clubs have undertaken varying levels of activity throughout this summer’s window, but you wouldn’t rule any of them out of competing for promotion next term and they will hope to bolster their squads with key additions before deadline day.

In what could potentially shape up to represent one of the EFL’s higher-profile summer transfer sagas, Alan Nixon of The Sun - via his exclusive Patreon service - has reported that West Ham, Wolves, Middlesbrough and Burnley all have James’ signature in their crosshairs ahead of an effort to make their moves in the remainder of this month’s window.

James, who has been widely-touted to secure a top-flight transfer this summer, is now reportedly poised to seriously consider available Championship destinations as he mulls over his options on the table.

As per Nixon’s update, Rennes are open to sanctioning the Hereford-born Welsh international’s sale for a £10 million outlay as opposed to giving the green-light for another loan exit away from Roazhon Park.

James has received interest from both Atalanta and Fulham, although there has been no further development in those sagas as Crystal Palace also continue to monitor his services.

Middlesbrough are believed to have added James’ name to a shortlist, with the extent of the Teessiders’ interest likely to depend on the outcome of their ongoing pursuit for Palace midfielder Justin Devenny.

As for Wolves and Burnley, who were both relegated from the Premier League last season alongside West Ham, interest is strong and the former are reportedly “desperate” to acquire James ahead of a host of divisional rivals.

The Hammers, however, are described as remaining on the fringes of the race right now amid a well-documented pursuit of Celtic midfield star Arne Engels.

As aforementioned, James enjoyed an outstanding individual campaign at Leicester last season and that leaves little surprise to be made at considerable Championship interest in the Birmingham City academy product.

James scored 11 goals from just 34 appearances playing in central midfield, while also registering four assists to establish himself as the talisman of a beleaguered Foxes side which would ultimately slip into League One.

Had James been fit for the season’s entirety, however, Leicester could well have retained their Championship status, with City’s shock relegation putting an end to any hopes of a permanent switch to the King Power Stadium.

But, with James having proven his worth as one of the Championship’s best midfielders with a serious goalscoring prowess after previously impressing during his teenage years at Birmingham, a move to a top-end second-tier side would now be justified.

We could see just how short of midfield options West Ham were during their season-opening 3-1 EFL Cup first-round victory over Portsmouth, though Wolves are considerably stronger in that area of the pitch with various eye-catching personnel to call upon despite seemingly representing a more serious contender in this race.

As for Burnley, new boss Nicky Hayen hasn’t inherited a depleted midfield stable and has already bolstered his options by signing Ugo Raghouber from Lille, although James would bring a completely new profile to the table.

Middlesbrough, having acquired Myles Peart-Harris and Sebastian Berhalter after selling Hayden Hackney to Everton, have a blend of profiles in the middle of the park yet James, with his track record of arriving late in the box and supplying goals from midfield, would also be a welcomed addition at the Riverside Stadium as Kim Hellberg bids to avenge last term’s play-off final defeat to Hull City.
