“Sorry” – Rooney apologises to £74m Man Utd star after ‘misjudgement

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney admits he was wrong to criticise Benjamin Sesko over his recent absence without having the full context.
The Slovenian striker has been struggling with a shin injury since the end of the previous campaign. After missing the entire pre-season, he made his return off the bench on the opening day of the season in Hull.
However, the 23-year-old’s displays were, for the most part, underwhelming. On the final weekend before the international break, Michael Carrick opted to drop Sesko from the matchday squad against Fulham.

The big centre-forward’s absence at Craven Cottage drew criticism from several pundits and former Man Utd players.
Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes suggested that as long as Sesko didn’t have a broken shin, he should have toughened up and taken the pitch.
Rooney was a little less blunt in his assessment, but he did suggest that the player could have taken an injection, as they used to back in the day, and made himself available.
However, it later turned out that Sesko’s condition is more serious than initially assumed, and he could be facing another long spell on the sidelines.
Therefore, Rooney felt he had wronged the Slovenian attacker, thus immediately offering an apology for his previous words.
“Well, if it’s long-term, then I suppose I should apologise,” said the legendary striker in his latest appearance on Stick to United (via RoundTable)
“So, I apologise, Sesko. I apologise if I misjudged you. Sorry.”
Michael Carrick given a real dilemma in Sesko’s absence

Kudos to Rooney for realising his mistake and making amends, unlike most other pundits who would have escaped the situation.
Nevertheless, the real issue for Man Utd is the absence of a genuine centre-forward at Carrick’s disposal.
Joshua Zirkzee is the other recognised striker in the squad, but the Dutchman hardly serves as a focal point in the box, as he prefers to roam all over the pitch, so Carrick doesn’t consider him suitable for his system.
The head coach has been relying on Matheus Cunha upfront, but the latter is more comfortable in a supporting role. The same goes for Bryan Mbeumo, albeit he might be a more convincing option than the Brazilian given his electric pace and physical strength.
United’s best hope at this stage is for Sesko to avoid a long-term stoppage and make his return to action in the coming weeks.
