January can change careers quickly, and for Alejandro Balde it may become the month that forces a decision. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona left-back has barely featured at the start of the season and could soon reassess where he stands.

This is not complicated. Footballers can accept competition. What they struggle with is irrelevance. Balde has played only 12 minutes across Barcelona’s first eight matches, all of them coming late in the 7-2 LaLiga win over Racing. For a player who was once first choice on the left and a regular in Spain squads after the 2022 World Cup, that is a serious drop.

Barcelona’s summer changed the landscape. The squad has been remodelled heavily, with Hamza, Gordon, Bisiwu, Adeyemi, Rodri, Cancelo, Gabriel Jesus and Livakovic coming in, while Marcus Rashford, Ronald Araujo, Hector Fort, Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski and Marc Casado were among those to move on. A bigger squad creates depth, but it also creates losers. Right now, Balde looks like one of them.

The key point in this Barcelona situation is simple, Balde is no longer close to the top of the queue. Last season he had already seen Joao Cancelo move ahead of him in the second half of the campaign. Now, under Hansi Flick, Xavi Espart has also overtaken him. That leaves Balde as the third-choice option at left-back, which is a problem for any ambitious 21-year-old trying to revive momentum.

Flick’s thinking appears clear. He has reportedly detected a stagnation in Balde’s level, both in matches and in training, and wants stronger competition at left-back to raise standards. Fine. Managers do that all the time. But if the competition ends with one player essentially disappearing from the rotation, there comes a point where the player has to respond in the market rather than on the pitch.

That is where January becomes relevant. Balde still has this season and one more left on his contract, which gives Barcelona some protection, but it does not remove the issue. If minutes do not improve, the player has every reason to revisit his future.

His agent Jorge Mendes added fuel without saying very much, insisting that “Balde estará bien en el futuro, no os preocupéis” and later, again on the subject of the defender’s future, “estará bien en el futuro”. Agents speak like this when they want to calm things down publicly while keeping options alive privately. It is standard business.

Barcelona, meanwhile, have their own concerns. The club did not complete the scale of exits it had hoped for and the financial fair play margin created was lower than ideal. In that context, a player who resisted leaving in the last window may look differently at the winter market if his role remains minimal.

Balde future depends on minutes, not sentiment

This is the part people often dress up with emotion. There is no need. Balde may want to stay, prove himself and fight. Admirable. But football is about status, rhythm and trust. At the moment, Barcelona are not giving him much of any of those.

He is not the only player at the club with an uncertain outlook, yet his case stands out because the decline in usage is so stark. One year you are established, the next you are an afterthought. That is how transfers happen.

If Flick starts using him, this calms down quickly. If not, Manchester United will keep watching and January will become more than background noise. At that point, the choice may stop being philosophical and become practical. Balde can either wait for circumstances to change, or he can go somewhere that actually needs him.

From a hopeful Manchester United perspective, this feels like one to monitor seriously. Balde fits the profile of a modern left-back, athletic, aggressive going forward and already tested at a very high level. If Barcelona have reduced him to 12 minutes in eight games, then United should be asking whether this is a rare market opening.

The attraction is obvious. Players in this situation often become available on terms that look far more reasonable than they would have 12 months earlier. If a talented young defender feels blocked, and his club need room financially, that is exactly when smart recruitment steps in.

There is also a squad logic to it. United have needed reliability and long-term upside in the full-back areas for a while. Balde would bring pace, recovery speed and the sort of technical comfort top sides expect from wide defenders. He would also arrive with a point to prove, which can be useful if the dressing room is healthy.

The only caution is that United should not move simply because a big name becomes available. They need the right fit, the right price and a clear medical and tactical view. Still, if Barcelona continue to sideline him, this is the kind of deal supporters will hope the club are ready to explore properly in January.
