Nobel Mendy’s leap from Spain’s fourth tier to Premier League as Hull City pay €25m

Hull City, newly promoted to the Premier League, have signed Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano for €25m. Rayo had only just made his loan permanent for €3.5m.

Born in Guédiawaye, he moved to France at 11, came through in Normandy, then via FC Mantois joined Paris FC’s academy in 2021 at 17.

He featured for the under-19s and reserves in National 3, then made a late debut in a 1-0 win over Pau on 26 December 2022. Game time vanished. Handed a first pro deal, he joined Stéphane Gilli’s rotation in 2023-24 and, after three outings, Betis loaned him with an option.

He did not reach La Liga immediately, playing mainly for Betis’s reserves in the fourth tier and earning one surprise Copa del Rey start, before the club triggered an option worth about one million euros. “Before football, there is family. For me, it is the most important thing. When you are so young and live alone like that, sometimes it is very hard, you need your loved ones by your side to support you,” he told El Desmarque.

Seven months later he played the semi-final second leg at Fiorentina, a 2-2 draw that took Betis to the final, then watched Chelsea win 4-1 from the bench despite Liga minutes against Atlético and Valencia.

Seeking minutes, he joined Rayo on loan in summer 2025 and often partnered Florian Lejeune, starting 22 Liga matches in 2025-26. In Europe he made three appearances without starting, including the final, a 1-0 defeat by Crystal Palace.

At 21 he earned a first Senegal cap against Gambia in late March. Hull then stepped in with a bid that was accepted, with Betis due 20% of the resale profit, and his next chapter will be in England.
