Manchester United get Benjamin Sesko injury update amid Slovenia squad decision

Striker has been suffering with niggling shin issue

Boštjan Cesar’s side have a flight of Nations League matches to look forward to in the coming weeks, with two matches against Scotland and further fixtures against North Macedonia and Switzerland on the cards.

The big centre-forward Sesko will play no part, however, after reaggravating the shin injury which he has been carrying since the latter stages of last season.

He first picked up the issue in a collision with Ibrahima Konate at Old Trafford in May, which saw him crash into the advertising hoardings. He did not play again for the remainder of the campaign, missed pre-season in its entirety and has seen his minutes limited in the early days of this season.

It had appeared Sesko was back to full fitness when he started against Sabah in the Champions League, appearing in four consecutive matches.

After playing 65 minutes in the Carabao Cup defeat by Brighton, though, he seems to have regressed.

He did not travel with his team-mates for Sunday’s draw with Fulham, after which Michael Carrick confirmed he had suffered a setback in his recovery.

“It was a pain in his shin,” said the under-pressure United boss, whose side heads into the international break with one win in their last five outings.

“We’re not sure with him yet. He felt a bit of pain after the game. We’re assessing him. He definitely wasn’t ready for today.”

Sesko will spend the next three weeks rehabbing at United’s Carrington training ground in the hopes he can be passed fit for the visit of Tottenham on October 10.

Sesko, 23, has 45 Slovenia caps and 16 goals to his name.
