Leeds United £40k-A-Week Star Unhappy At Elland Road: Should They Sell Him In January?

Leeds United face a decision over Lukas Nmecha after reports raised doubts about his future. Football Insider reported on September 28 that the 27-year-old striker feels unhappy with his limited role and is unlikely to extend his contract unless his situation changes.

Nmecha has made four Premier League appearances this season, all from the bench, and has played only 64 minutes. Dominic Calvert-Lewin remains Daniel Farke’s preferred central striker, leaving Nmecha with little room to establish himself through regular league starts.

The German joined Leeds on a free transfer in July 2025 and signed an initial two-year contract, which expires in June 2027. He contributed seven goals and three assists in 37 appearances last season, although he started only 10 Premier League matches. His role has changed very little, despite the club valuing his ability to provide cover.

Leeds rejected interest in Nmecha during the summer because Farke wanted another option behind Calvert-Lewin. However, that stance could create a different problem in January. If Nmecha refuses fresh terms, foreign clubs can approach him about a pre-contract agreement from the opening of the winter window, potentially leaving Leeds with less control over his next move.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Nmecha will listen to other offers. That stance makes sense from the player’s perspective. At 27, he needs regular football, with his contract entering its final months.

Should Leeds United change their approach to Nmecha?

Leeds should avoid breaking their wage structure simply to persuade Nmecha to stay. A new contract needs to reflect his squad role, rather than promise minutes that Farke cannot guarantee. Calvert-Lewin currently occupies the central role, while Leeds need competition and cover across a demanding Premier League season.

Yet Leeds should not let the situation drift until June. If Nmecha still rejects an extension after talks, the club should consider a January sale and use the fee to recruit another striker. That would protect the squad while avoiding a free departure.

Capology estimates Nmecha’s current gross salary at £40,000 per week, although the figure remains an estimate rather than an official club disclosure. His reported market value sits around £8m-£9m, but that does not guarantee Leeds would receive such a fee in January. Leeds United need a practical decision, not an expensive promise. If Nmecha cannot secure meaningful minutes, selling him could give Farke another option before the season’s decisive stretch.
