Jamie Carragher reacts to ‘ludicrous’ rumours he’s hearing out of Old Trafford after United’s rocky start

Jamie Carragher has suggested it would be ‘ludicrous’ for Manchester United to part ways with Michael Carrick so early on in his tenure.

Unfortunately for the Red Devils legend, rumours have already begun doing the rounds claiming he could be dismissed before the end of the campaign.

United have (once again) recorded one of their worst starts to a Premier League season, having claimed only five points from the opening five gameweeks.

It’s left them sitting in 12th over the lengthy international break, which won’t be doing any favours for the side’s morale.

When club action resumes, they’re in for a particularly tricky month, as they have six fixtures – two of which are in the Champions League – to prepare for across October.

It’s the kind of period that could really make or break your season, especially if injuries start stacking up.

Reacting to United’s lacklustre form prompting uncertainty over Carrick’s position, Carragher said on The Overlap: “I think it would be ludicrous to get rid of Michael Carrick.

“I don’t see Michael Carrick as the Manchester United manager in the long term. I almost feel like he’s in there doing a job for the club to get them through a rocky period and then passing the baton on.

“If that sounds disrespectful to him, I don’t mean it like that. He came in, and Manchester United needed calm.

“I don’t think the idea of changing Michael Carrick now or at the next international break makes sense. It just needs to be relaxed. Just let him get on with it.”
