‘I’d prefer to…’: United star sends hint to Carrick over his favoured position after being shoehorned into new role

Patrick Dorgu has revealed that he actually prefers playing as a left-back, despite being utilised mostly as a winger under Michael Carrick.
The only times that the Manchester United defender has had to drop back into the backline are when Luke Shaw has been unavailable through injury in recent weeks.

Then, on occasions when Dorgu is also sidelined, Noussair Mazraoui is next in line to deputise at left-back.
It’s one area of the squad that was in dire need of reinforcements over the summer, but INEOS controversially opted against bringing in any signings to provide coverage for Shaw.
They had spent the majority of the window eyeing a move for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, despite being made aware from the get-go that he was absolutely not for sale under any circumstances.
Dorgu has started in three of United’s first seven matches of 2026/2027 across all competitions and has racked up 243 minutes of action in total.
He is now on international duty with his native Denmark, so Carrick will be crossing his fingers that the 21-year-old stays fit over the three-week break.

Speaking to Tipsbladet this week, Dorgu weighed in on his positional changes and how he’s adapted.

“I’d prefer to have one fixed position,” the young Red revealed. “It makes things easier to work on during training. But many players today can play multiple positions.
“I just want to be on the pitch, regardless of the position.
“I started my professional career as a left-back, so that feels most natural to me, but I can also play the attacking roles I do at United.”
