Lennart Karl has recently made headlines at FC Bayern for more than just his goal celebration. The 18-year-old also set a remarkable record during the 2-0 away win against Atlético Madrid. With his goal that put the score at 1-0, the talented forward reached a milestone that few players his age have achieved before him. The youngster is now in distinguished company.

In the 54th minute, Karl put Munich on the path to victory at the Estadio Metropolitano. With a technically sophisticated finish, the German national team player beat Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak, paving the way for the important Champions League victory.

But the goal was of enormous significance not only in sporting terms. It was already Karl’s fifth goal in the Champions League. This makes the Bayern youngster one of the youngest players in Champions League history to reach this milestone.

Only three world-class stars were younger than Karl

At just 18 years and 254 days old, Karl scored his fifth Champions League goal. Only three players have achieved this at a younger age.

The record is held by Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona, who had already scored five goals in the Champions League at the age of 17 years and 291 days.

Kylian Mbappé also reached this milestone earlier. The current Real Madrid star was just 18 years and 120 days old when he scored his fifth goal.

Rounding out this extraordinary list is Real Madrid legend Raúl, who broke the record at 18 years and 162 days.

Karl thus follows directly in the footsteps of three players who have shaped—and continue to shape—European soccer for years.

The statistic underscores the enormous potential of the Bayern talent. Despite his recent fluctuations in form, Karl remains one of the most promising attacking players in Europe.

Yet the past few weeks have been anything but easy for the 18-year-old. Following his meteoric rise last season, Karl has recently come under criticism for his performances and public conduct. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß, in particular, had spoken out bluntly and announced a serious conversation with the young player.

Sports Director Max Eberl had also commented on the young forward’s development. After the crucial goal against Atlético, however, the focus initially shifted to Karl’s eye-catching goal celebration. The youngster held both hands next to his ears and mimicked speaking. Many observers interpreted the gesture as a response to his critics.

Eberl, on the other hand, focused on the on-field performance of the Bayern gem after the final whistle. “Lennart Karl is an important player for us. We’ve never denied that, and he contributed just as much today—he worked incredibly hard and then rewarded himself with the goal,” praised the sporting director.

For Karl, the goal is likely to be especially valuable after the difficult past few weeks.

Historical Champions League statistics also highlight the extraordinary level the 18-year-old has already reached. The fact that his fifth goal places him in the same league as Yamal, Mbappé, and Raúl is a remarkable milestone in his still-young career.

Now, the Bayern youngster needs to maintain his form and establish himself as a key offensive force for the German record champions on a long-term basis.
