Chelsea have been presented with a surprise opening in the market, with Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly emerging as a possible summer departure after Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival in north London. According to Football London, both Chelsea and Manchester United have been given the chance to explore a deal for the 19-year-old, in a development that would have felt unlikely only a short time ago.

From Arsenal’s perspective, this is one to watch rather than one to rush. Lewis-Skelly remains highly regarded internally, and his profile as a Hale End graduate with senior experience gives him obvious value. He featured 36 times in all competitions last season, although only 19 of those appearances came as a starter, which tells its own story about where he currently sits in the pecking order.

The timing of this situation matters. Arsenal’s move for Bruno Guimaraes, completed for £75 million, has altered the midfield landscape. Lewis-Skelly has been used throughout pre-season as a defensive midfielder, largely because Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Guimaraes have all been absent. That exposure has offered useful evidence for decision-makers, and the feedback appears mixed.

There is no doubt, however, about his talent. He ended last season strongly in the left eight role and did enough to earn a start in the Champions League final. That versatility, central midfield with the capacity to fill in on the left side of defence, is part of why Chelsea have tracked him for some time.

The key line from the report is clear: “There is a sense that if Arsenal were made a good offer by Chelsea, the north Londoners would find it very hard to say no.” That places the issue firmly in the hands of the buying club.

Chelsea’s summer has already been aggressive. More than £270 million has been committed on 10 signings, including pre-agreed arrivals, and the current focus is understood to be shifting towards exits. Xabi Alonso already has substantial midfield depth in Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, Valentin Barco, Jordan Henderson and Enzo Fernandez, whose future has attracted attention but who is still expected back in training and likely to remain for the new season. At left back, Pep Chavarria and Jorrel Hato provide options following Marc Cucurella’s exit.

That leaves Chelsea with a decision based less on need and more on long-term upside. Lewis-Skelly may not be an obvious priority, but opportunities involving top academy talent from a rival are rare.

Our View

From an Arsenal supporter perspective, this report is a real surprise. Myles Lewis-Skelly has always felt like one of those players you keep, develop and eventually trust in the biggest moments. We already saw signs of that last season, especially when he looked comfortable in advanced midfield areas and earned serious responsibility. For him to now be discussed as a possible sale to Chelsea of all clubs feels jarring.

The Guimaraes signing clearly changes things. Arsenal have added a top-class midfielder, and the competition is now fierce with Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino also there. Even so, elite squads need depth, and they need young players who can grow into major roles. Lewis-Skelly fits that description perfectly.

What would worry supporters most is the idea that a strong offer could change Arsenal’s stance. Financially, it might make sense on paper, especially for a player who has not fully nailed down a starting place. Emotionally and strategically, though, it would sting. Selling a Hale End talent to a direct rival always carries risk, especially when the player’s ceiling remains so high.

If Arsenal genuinely believe in his future, they should resist. Loans, rotation and patience are all better outcomes than strengthening Chelsea with a player who could still become a major figure at the Emirates Stadium.
