Aston Villa 'increasingly resigned' to selling £60million Arsenal target

Aston Villa fear they are fighting a losing battle in their attempts to keep Ezri Konsa .

The 28-year-old has already been the subject of one failed bid from Arsenal this summer, but the Premier League champions are expected to return with an improved offer.

Mikel Arteta ’s efforts this summer have thus far been focused on strengthening in attack.

Christos Tzolis arrived from Club Brugge last month and further reinforcements are expected, although Arsenal were finally forced to admit defeat in their attempts to sign Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior .

The disappointment at missing out on the Brazil international will partially be offset by the signing of his international teammate, Bruno Guimaraes, who is set to join from Newcastle in a £75million deal in the coming days.

Despite the need for further bolster their forward line, Arteta is aware of the need to strengthen the Premier League’s meanest defence, especially in light of William Saliba ’s back injury.

The France international is facing an extended period on the sidelines after he aggravated a long-standing back injury during Les Bleus’ World Cup semi-final defeat against Spain.

‘William Saliba has returned to us from World Cup duty, where he played an integral role in France reaching the semi-finals of the competition,’ read a statement on the club’s official website.

‘Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation.

‘Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.

‘William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continual management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period.

‘Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.’

Villa were understood to be annoyed at being lowballed by Arsenal with their opening offer for Kona but, according to the Daily Mail , acknowledge a move is on the cards for the former Brentford defender should the Gunners return with an improved bid.

Konsa would offer cover for Saliba and could provide a potential solution at right-back where Jurrien Timber and Ben White have both struggled with injury issues over the course of the last 18 months.
