Arsenal just signed Bruno Guimaraes and the Premier League odds have already moved
Arsenal won their first Premier League title for the first time in 22 years last season.
They opened the summer as defending champions and the bookmakers’ favourites to repeat. After recently agreeing a £75 million fee with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes, their odds were cut.
The Brazilian made 195 appearances for Newcastle after joining from Lyon in 2022, and the fee reflects what a reliable ball-winner at his level actually costs in 2026.
The title odds before the announcement listed Arsenal at 6/4, Manchester City at 5/2, Liverpool at 11/2. After the Guimaraes deal, the Gunners’ odds shortened.
How much depends on which platform you check and when. Adding a midfielder of that quality to a squad that just won the title had a predictable impact on how the market rates their chances.
The Premier League odds at the start of any summer are built on incomplete information. The transfer window is open until September 1, and the market is continuously adjusting as deals happen.
The Premier League odds being offered right now reflect the current state of every squad in the division, which is not the state they will be in when the season kicks off on August 22.
Arsenal signing Guimaraes moves their price. Newcastle losing him moves theirs. Both adjustments are rational. Neither is the last adjustment the market will make before a ball is kicked.
What Guimaraes actually brings to Arsenal
Declan Rice needs help. Rice is exceptional, but he has been covering ground that a properly constructed midfield would share more evenly.
Having Guimaraes next to him changes how Rice can be used, which influences how the whole team can be built.
The passing tempo out from the back, the pressing triggers, the ability to stay compact without sacrificing attack – all of it improves when the player next to Rice is capable of doing what Guimaraes.
Martin Odegaard’s presence complicates things. A midfield with both Guimaraes and Odegaard might be too heavily weighted for two deep-lying creative influences.
The suggestion that Odegaard could leave reflects a genuine tactical question rather than just transfer noise.
Arsenal’s title defence might look significantly different in terms of personnel than the title win did, which is a more interesting story than just adding a good player.
What the rest of the market is doing
Man City’s odds of 5/2 are intriguing given they are starting a season without manager Pep Guardiola for the first time since 2016.
Enzo Maresca has inherited a squad still full of quality, but he will want to put his own stamp on things. The market is giving City significant credit for the players they have.
Whether that credit is warranted depends heavily on how the transition goes in the opening weeks.
Liverpool and Chelsea are heading into the season with new managers, while Manchester United are set to embark on their first full campaign under Michael Carrick.
This potentially gives Arsenal another advantage, as they know what Mikel Arteta brings to the table. Stability can be hugely important in football.
Guimaraes’ arrival strengthens a title-winning squad. The Premier League odds reflect that move.
What happens before August 22
Arsenal may make further moves this summer. The same point applies to each of their title rivals.
The title odds on September 1 when the transfer window closes will undoubtedly look different to the ones available today.
The Guimaraes deal highlights that Arsenal are serious about retaining the title. They are trying to establish a period of sustained dominance, and the oddsmakers fancy their chances.
