Amorim makes drastic Man Utd U-turn after claiming he wouldn't change for the POPE

Ex-Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has revealed that he WOULD be willing to change his tactics despite vowing not to at Old Trafford. The Portuguese coach had a spell with the Red Devils between November 2024 and January 2026.

But his stint with United was miserable in the majority, with Amorim eventually being sacked. One of the main downfalls of his time with the club was his determination to stick by his three-at-the-back philosophy despite a number of players being uncomfortable with the approach.

He even went as far as suggesting even the head of the Catholic church couldn’t change his mind. Speaking at the time, Amorim said: "No, no, no. No one. Not even the Pope.

"This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. There will be an evolution, but we need to make all the good steps.

"If I'm a player and I have a coach that, with a lot of pressure, it doesn't matter if he's all around the world, is saying: 'you need to change the system.' And I'm going to change. In this moment, they will look at me in a different way.

"So, everything, when you think about the impact that any decision is going to have on the team, everything is important."

It now appears that Amorim is willing to compromise after all. Speaking after his new club AC Milan beat Lecce 3-0 on Sunday, he claimed that he would be open to tweaking his system to suit his players - not the other way around.

“A great victory,” Amorim said. “I liked the movement, especially the attacking depth. We managed the game and read the opponent well.

“These are different times, but we're improving. Today the players had more freedom; in recent games we were a bit too static, stuck.

“I can't repeat my mistakes from Manchester. If we don't have the characteristics to play a certain way, we have to adapt.

“We'll go back to building with three, but we'll see. Here in Italy, the coaches are very good, especially at going after other teams one-on-one.”

Amorim arrived at the San Siro in the summer and he has enjoyed a bright start to life with his new employers, with AC Milan unbeaten in their opening five games, three of those being wins. That leaves the side fifth in Serie A and two points behind current leaders Roma.
