Isak’s reply was measured.

“Szoboszlai was the penalty taker for that match. Those are team matters and it’s not for the media or the fans to decide who should take a penalty.”

It was an explanation of responsibility, rather than an attempt to prolong the exchange. Whatever the appeal of seeing a returning striker confront his former supporters from the penalty spot, Liverpool already had a player designated for the task.

Newcastle return brings an unavoidable spotlight

Isak knew that going back to St James’ Park would carry significance beyond an ordinary away fixture.
